I’ll provide my answer to the question here in the post, and then you can leave your response in the comments. While you’re in the comments section, see how others answered the ice breaker question.

It’s April 1st, which means it is April Fool’s Day.  This is a day for jokes and pranks.  Today”s Ice Breaker question is inspired by this “important” holiday.  We all need laughter in our lives.

Question:  What is your favorite joke?

My Answer:  I love corny jokes.  In fact, many people call me the King of the Dad Jokes.  Is that a compliment?  Here’s one of my favorite jokes:

Q:  What time do you go to the dentist?

A:  2:30 (Tooth-hurty).  Get it?

I’m working my way through Tom Rath’s book, StrengthsFinder 2.0.  This book and the associated self assessment is designed to help readers know, understand, and use their strengths.  I took the self-assessment last night, and my results are the inspiration for this week’s Ice Breaker question.  (For a list of the 34 strengths or talent themes described in this book, click here.)

Question:  What are your biggest strengths?

My Answer:  According to the StrengthsFinder 2.0 assessment, my biggest strengths are:

  • Harmony – “You look for areas of agreement.  In your view there is little to be gained from conflict and friction, so you seek to hold them to a minimum.  When you know that the people around you hold differing views, you try to find the common ground.”  StrengthsFinder 2.0 page 109
  • Achiever – “Achiever describes a constant need for achievement.  You feel as if every day starts at zero.  By the end of the day you must achieve something tangible in order to feel good about yourself.”  StrengthsFinder 2.0 page 37
  • Responsibility – “Your Responsibility them forces you to take psychological ownership for anything you commit to, and whether large or small, you feel emotionally bound to follow it through to completion.  Your good name depends on it.”  StrengthsFinder 2.0 page 149
  • Discipline – “Your world needs to be predictable.  It needs to be ordered and planned.  So you instinctively impose structure on your world.  You set up routines.  You focus on timelines and deadlines.”  StrengthsFinder 2.0 page 93
  • Analytical – “You do not necessarily want to destroy other people’s ideas, but you do insist that their theories be sound.  You see yourself as objective and dispassionate.  You like data because they are value free.  They have no agenda.  Armed with these data, you search for patterns and connections.”  StrengthsFinder 2.0 page 49

Question:  What makes your heart sing?

My Answer:  My heart sings when I see my kids doing what they love.  My heart sings when I watch my daughter run.  My heart sings when I see my son tickling the ivory keys of our piano.  My heart sings when I help someone at work figure something out for the first time.  My heart sings when my customers can’t say enough about my team members.  My heart sings when I see people connecting to each other.  My heart sings when I work hard and see the fruits of my labor.  My heart sings when I spend uninterrupted time with my wife.  My heart sings when I see the smiles of widows and orphans in the village of Xenacoj who are simply thankful for another day.  My heart sings when I finish a workout knowing the hard work will pay off.  My heart sings when I see an item scratched off my to do list.  My heart sings when I reach a big goal.  My heart sings when I go camping with my long-time friends.  My heart sings when a piece of truth connects deeply with me in a brand new way.  My heart sings when I put aside the busy distractions of life long enough to see and feel the hand of God touching my life.  That’s what makes my heart sing.

With Valentine’s Day coming up on Sunday, this week’s question seems appropriate.

Question:  What is your favorite love song?

My Answer:  Songs have a way of connecting us to a past memory.  For this reason, I have several favorite love songs:

  1. Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton is one of my favorites.  My wife and I shared our first dance to this song.
  2. In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel is another favorite.  My college friends who were there will remember the dance floor clearing, so Leanne and I could dance to this song.
  3. It Must Be Love by Rickie Lee Jones from the Thirtysomething soundtrack takes up one of my spots.  I listened to this track over and over again the summer after Leanne and I first met as I was traveling to Connecticut and Massachusetts for my summer job with ServiceMaster.
  4. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers is another favorite.  This song is a little more energetic than your traditional love song, but it reminds me that love is fun and it often means going the distance for the one you love.
  5. I Will Be Here by Stephen Curtis Chapman has a spot on my list.  This song was performed at our wedding, but I don’t think the words of this song fully resonated with me until Leanne and I went through some of the challenges of life.

My Answer:  I’ll make three predictions:

  2. Peyton Manning will become the oldest quarterback in NFL history to throw a touchdown to both teams in the Super Bowl.
  3. Carolina Panthers will defeat the Denver Broncos 28-16.

Question:  What makes you so special?

My Answer:  When I was in 3rd or 4th grade, I had a T-shirt that said “I know I’m somebody, ’cause God don’t make no junk.”  I guess that’s the number one thing that makes me special.  Besides that, one of the things that makes me so special is that I’m an engineer who has actually learned to enjoy writing and speaking to others.  I have a story that is different from your story, and I’m the only one who can share it from my perspective.
