Remembering 9/11

This has been a year for me to remember 9/11.

Last year at this time, I was running the 1st Ever Race to Remember Half Marathon.  It was a time to remember and pray for those directly impacted by the events of 9/11.  You can read about it here.  (I’m hoping to make this an annual event, but this year’s “race” will be held later this fall as I recover from tendonitis in my knee.)

This past fall, our family journeyed to New York City where we visited the 9/11 Memorial at the site of the Twin Towers.  This was certainly a moving experience.  You can read more about my experience here.

Finally this summer, Leanne and I stopped by the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA.  Again, it was an experience I won’t soon forget.

As I think about today, I remember.  I remember the race. I remember the visits to these two memorials.  I remember what I was doing eleven years ago on a clear September day.  I remember the families who lost loved ones this day.  And I remember that we still live in a broken world that needs to know the love of God.

What were you doing eleven years ago?  How are you spending the day?  Are you doing anything special?

I was living in Louisville, Kentucky. I had gotten out of Greek class at the seminary I attended for a year. I saw a bunch of people around a TV. I asked what happened. They said a plane had flown into the tower. I thought they meant a small plane and continued on about my business. I ate breakfast and then went to chapel. That’s when the severity of it was made known to me. I went to class and my professor didn’t have a TV, so he didn’t realize it was a big deal. Then I went home and celebrated my son’s third birthday.

With two other guys from the church I was pastoring at the time, I was driving to a one day satellite seminar. When we got there we found out about the planes flying into the tower. I confess my ignorance. I did not know what the Twin Towers were. I just didn’t care about things like that. The seminar kept showing in a split screen style what was happening. I drove home and spent the evening watching it hoping they would find people alive.

I was getting ready to head to another day at college. I was in the basement getting dressed when my brother called and told me what happened. While he was on the phone with me, he said “Oh no… There’s another plane flying into the towers.” Amazing it’s already been 11 years.

Nothing special in remembrance of the event but I do have something special going on. There’s a telecommunications seminar in a nearby city that I’ll be attending. One of my virtue mentors, Michael Hyatt, will be speaking. Should be a great time.

I was dropping off my car for service. I walked in the tire shop and saw that the first plane had hit. I then went on to my Tuesday morning Bible study group and there we heard about the second plane. We were all in shock. It’s like when the Challenger blew up….you just never forget where you were at those moment.
